New Blue Spruce Tree Planted by FHS Alumni

On June 15, 2010 the FHS Alumni Association successfully transplanted a beautifully shaped 22 foot Colorado Blue Spruce Tree on the west lawn of the high school to replace the previous tree that was destroyed in a fierce January storm.  The new tree was generously donated to the Alumni Association by the Acushnet Fire Department and was expertly transplanted by the Patrick Dale Tree Moving Co. of Falmouth, MA.

The FHS Alumni Association illuminates the spruce tree on the west lawn of the high school each holiday season to represent the donations that are given to the annual Light-a-Light Fundraiser.  This is the sole annual fundraiser used by the FHS Alumni Association to finance its’ various projects throughout the year. In 2009 total donations were in excess of $18,000, the single largest amount since the first Light-a-Light campaign in 1985.  In the 26 year history of Light-a-Light close to $300,000 has been raised by the alumni and put directly back into Fairhaven High School in the form of restoration projects, scholarships, teacher mini-grants, as well as support of a variety of school activities such as the After Prom Party, new books for the Library, a new computer room, etc.  The FHS Alumni Board of Directors are very appreciative of the generosity and community spirit displayed by the Acushnet Fire Department and Fire Chief Kevin Gallagher in their donation of this beautiful 22 foot tree.  Steve Mercer, our certified arborist from Davey Tree Expert Co. who will perform an annual maintenance program on the tree, predicts the tree will grow to be at least 40 - 50 feet in height once it is full grown.
