Mrs. Martin Celebrates her 85th Birthday

On June 20, 2009 the Class of 1961 sponsored a birthday celebration for Mrs. Evelyn (Teixeira) Martin ‘41 who everyone remembers as the Main Office secretary who ran FHS for more than 40 years. Mrs. Martin was almost speechless (but not quite) on the occasion of the celebration of her 85th birthday sponsored by the Class of 1961 in the Library of Fairhaven High School on Saturday afternoon June 20, 2009.  Tea, sandwiches and pastries were served as a string quartet comprised of FHS muscians provided background music in what many of us remember as the “round gym”.  When Fairhaven High School was renovated 12 years ago in order to comply with Massachusetts State Curriculum Standards, the old gym was converted into a magnificent library and media center which has twenty-four computer stations.  On this Saturday afternoon approximately fifty alumni gathered to honor Mrs. Martin who was very surprised when an appearance was made by Mr. Mark Twain (impersonator Richard Clark) who entertained the audience with stories and words of wisdom.  Mrs. Martin, who remains as sharp as ever, concluded the event with some well chosen words of her own.  She expressed gratitude to “all of her kids” as she referred to all of the alums present, and related a few stories about some of the students that she had straightened out during her tenure in the school.  The event was well-planned and organized by the Class of 1961 and concluded with a photo session in the Brick Memorial Park just outside of the Library, which has been meticulously landscaped and maintained by that class.
