The Fairhaven High School Alumni Association has announced the awarding of $13,100 in Teacher Mini-Grants to FHS teachers and staff to be utilized during the 2011-2012 school year at the high school. This is the third consecutive year that these mini-grants have been given to the teachers, and represents the largest annual amount given to date.
Robert Foster, President of the Fairhaven High School Alumni Association, stated after presenting this year’s check to Principal Tara Kohler that the highly successful Light-a-Light Fundraiser during the 2010 holiday season allowed the FHS Alumni to be even more generous this year when deciding how many grants to fund. He further stated that “the monies will go directly into materials and equipment that will benefit classroom instruction by providing teachers with technology that they otherwise would not be able to acquire from school budgets that are being constricted in these tight financial times”. Some of the materials being purchased with these grants includes over $9,000 for eight Mimios (technology that transforms an ordinary whiteboard into a wireless interactive whiteboard with which a teacher can import lessons from a laptop and actively engage students in their lessons). The mini-grants also funded $1,000 for the purchase of two Epson Powerlite Projectors for the Special Education Dept., as well as three Amazon Kindles and 19 electronic books for that department. A grant of $2,000 was given to the Science Department for the purchase of a PASCO Absorption Spectrophotometer and a system for Xplorer GLX.
