In August 2010 the FHS Alumni Association partnered with the Fairhaven School Department to repair and restore the Clock Tower at Fairhaven High School. The clock, which has not been working for several years, is now fully functional and illuminated at night. A new clock mechanism has been installed and the 8 clock hands have been replaced by About Time Clock Restoration of Connecticut. The 4 clock faces glass have been replaced by Guido’s Glass Company of New Bedford. The FHS Alumni used $7,500 from last year’s Light-a-Light donations to assist the Fairhaven School Department by funding 50% of this project. (Photo courtesy of Jim Mahaney ‘68)
Earlier in the summer About Time Clock Restoration had restored the clock at the Fairhaven Town Hall on Centre Street, and the company approached the Fairhaven School Department about working on the FHS clock, which had not been operating or illuminated for years. Business Manager Paul Kitchen contacted the FHS Alumni Association about the prospect of funding 50% of the project with the school department using some monies from the Rogers Trust Fund to fund the other 50%. After the mandatory bidding process was completed, About Time’s workers removed the old clock mechanism and installed a modern mechanism and clock controller that will control the clock movement and automatically reset it for daylight saving time and power failures. Guido’s Glass Company of New Bedford handled the glass repair portion of the project, which ended up being more extensive than originally estimated. The FHS Alumni Association is thrilled to have once again successfully partnered with Fairhaven High School to restore another portion of the “castle on the hill.”
